Why I built PlanItShare

Short version: I travel a lot, my friends and I split bills constantly, and I really wanted an excuse to build something real with Fable 5.

The itch I was scratching

I travel more than is probably reasonable, and for years I've relied on TripIt to keep flights, hotels, and half-remembered plans in one place. It's good software. But every trip also comes with a second, messier spreadsheet: who paid for what. My friends and I settle up trip expenses — and honestly a lot of our regular group hangouts too — through Revolut, which handles the money fine but has never once cared what the money was actually for. TripIt won't split a taxi fare three ways, and Revolut doesn't know you went to Chalkidiki in August. Somewhere between those two apps there was a gap exactly the shape of a weekend project. That, and I wanted a real reason to build something end-to-end with Fable 5 instead of just reading about it. PlanItShare is what happens when "I should try this new model" collides with "why do I still do this math in my head" — and it's open to my friends, and honestly anyone else who wants in.

About the author

By day, I'm a Principal Solutions Architect at Epsilon Net in Thessaloniki, where AI shows up twice: as a tool I use to get work done, and as a feature we build into the products we ship.

Since 2020, I've also taught in the Computer Science Department at the University of York Europe Campus (City College), and I do a fair amount of mentoring outside the classroom too — including through AZK's (Αλεξάνδρεια Ζώνη Καινοτομίας) "Παραγωγικό Σκασιαρχείο" program, where high-school students spend real time inside companies before they have to decide what a career actually looks like.

This project is where all three hats — architect, teacher, and the guy who still hasn't found a group chat that agrees on where to eat — ended up on the same person.

What it's built on (briefly, I promise)

Next.js on the frontend, Supabase for the database, auth, and storage, Tailwind for styling, Mapbox for the maps, and Claude doing the unglamorous work of reading your forwarded flight confirmation emails and figuring out what's actually in them. Nothing exotic — the interesting part isn't the stack, it's how it got written.

How it actually got built

Not with one AI tool — with a small assembly line of them. Claude Code did essentially all of the design and implementation, from the database schema to the button you're about to click. Perplexity handled the deep research and helped me write the instructions I fed to Claude, which — if you've ever tried to brief a very capable but very literal junior engineer — is its own skill. Grok handled some of the imagery. No single tool gets full credit, and none of them get none of it.

A word on AI, jobs, and why I'm not worried

I also lecture in Computer Science at the University of York Europe Campus (City College), so I get the "is AI coming for my job" question a lot — usually from students who just watched Claude Code finish in twenty minutes what used to be a two-week assignment. Here's my honest answer: coding, the manual act of typing out syntax, is dying as a full-time human job. Software engineering is not. A civil engineer designs a bridge and calculates exactly how much cement it needs — they don't personally mix it or pour it. That's not a demotion, it's the job description. Software engineers are heading the same direction: less time hand-typing the mundane parts, more time on the design, the judgment calls, and the "does this actually solve the right problem" thinking that a model can't do for you. The syntax was never the hard part. It just used to take up all the time we had left over for the hard part.

I write about whatever I'm actually thinking about, which turns out to be a deliberate mashup of three things: software engineering in the AI era (the decisions behind this app, the prompt engineering that worked and the parts that didn't), travel-savvy advice from someone who over-plans every trip, and mentoring notes for high schoolers, college students, and anyone navigating a career in tech or computer science. Same person wrote all of it, so it's tagged, not separated into three different blogs.
